This fall, Miami will have a first- and second-round NHL draftee on its roster.

Incoming RedHawks freshman Tim Runtso was drafted by Montreal in the second round on Saturday.

The Canadiens traded up to the 57th overall selection to acquire Runtso, meaning they were likely targeting him.

Runtso, a defenseman from WHL Victoria, netted 11 goals and dished for 33 assists in 68 games for the Royals in 2025-26.

Following his development in the Los Angeles Kings’ juniors program, the Belarussian-U.S. dual citizen from Marina del Rey, Calif., made the jump to Victoria from NAHL St. Cloud, where he went 8-19-27 in 53 games in 2024-25.

The last Montreal draftee to suit up for the RedHawks was Colin Sullivan, a 2011 seventh-round pick.

Two other Canadiens picks have played for Miami. Brian Savage, a 12-year NHL veteran, was selected in the eighth round of the 1990 draft, and Stephen Rohr went in Round 7 a year prior.

Miami’s Ilia Morozov was picked in the first round — 20th overall by Buffalo — on Friday. It’s the first time the RedHawks have ever had multiple players taken in the opening two rounds of the NHL draft.

MU’s most lucrative previous drafts were 1988 and 2011.

In 1988, Todd Harkins was drafted in the second round and Craig Fisher went a round later. Twenty-three years later, Tyler Biggs went in the first round, Blake Coleman was taken in the third and Sean Kuraly was selected in the fifth.
