For the first time in three years, Miami had a player selected in the NHL entry draft.
Incoming freshman Red Savage, younger brother of current RedHawk Ryan Savage and son of former NHLer and MU alum Brian Savage, was selected in the fourth round, No. 114 overall by the Detroit Red Wings.

The 18-year-old center/wing played for U.S. National Development Team in 2020-21 and the true freshman projects as a top-six forward for the RedHawks this fall.
Scouts have praised Savage’s defensive ability, but he stepped up offensively last season, going 18-24-42 in 46 games for the Under-18 team vs. USNDT’s rigorous schedule.
Miami, which did not have a single draftee on its roster for the first time since 1983, also added transfer goalie Logan Neaton, a fifth-round selection of the Winnipeg Jets in 2019.
Neaton logged just six games in two seasons at UMass.-Lowell but should compete for time in net in 2021-22.
The last RedHawks drafted was Jonathan Gruden in 2018.
No Miamian has been selected earlier than the fourth round since first-rounder Jack Roslovic in 2015.
