A week after signing its first-ever player from U Sports, Miami added a second to its 2025-26 roster.

Defenseman Owen Lalonde will join the RedHawks this fall, following a four-year career at Queens University in Kingston, Ont.

U Sports is the Canadian version of the NCAA. Almost all U Sports athletes filter in from top-tier Canadian juniors leagues, which were previously considered professional, so those players were ineligible to join NCAA schools.

Meaning essentially this is the first off-season U Sports players have been able to sign with colleges in the U.S., and Miami is one of only a handful of Division I programs that have inked U Sports athletes.

In 95 games with Queens, the Windsor, Ont., native racked up 15 goals and 66 assists for 81 points.

Lalonde finished 2-23-25 in 26 games last season as the Gaels qualified for the eight-team University Cup — U Sports’ national championship.

Prior to Queens, Lalonde played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with Sudbury, Guelph and Flint. He dressed for 256 OHL games, tallying 12 goals and 88 assists for 100 points.

His best OHL season was 2018-19, when he went 7-34-41 in 68 games for Guelph and added a goal and nine assists in 24 playoff games as the Storm won the league championship and advanced to the semifinals of the Memorial Cup.

Goalie Matteo Drobac signed with Miami last week after one season at the University of Western Ontario, becoming the first-ever U Sports athlete to ink with the RedHawks.

The addition of Lalonde gives Miami eight defensemen signees, and three more D-men are still on the roster from last season for a total of 11. The RedHawks will likely carry 8-9 defensemen on their roster in 2025-26.
