MU athletic director David Sayler was quoted in a statement released Tuesday morning, confirming reports that Chris Bergeron is being relieved of duties after five seasons behind the RedHawks’ bench.

“Parting ways with Coach Bergeron is a decision based on a complete analysis of his tenure as head coach at Miami,” Sayler said in the release. “I want to thank Chris and his entire family for their commitment to Miami Hockey, as well as to the institution and community, over a total of 19 years as a student-athlete, assistant coach and finally, head coach.”

Bergeron captained the RedHawks’ first-ever NCAA Tournament-qualifying team in 1993, finishing with 130 career points, and as a 10-year assistant at Miami, helped lead the team to back-to-back Frozen Fours in 2009 and 2010.

But as a head coach, the RedHawks went 35-116-16 under Bergeron, including an NCHC all-time worst 1-21-2 in league play this season, and Miami did not win a game after Jan. 13, finishing 0-15-1.

“We have begun an immediate search to identify a new leader that will make our program competitive within the NCHC, while also maintaining our academic and community service standards that we set for all of our student-athletes,” Sayler said.
